Stop Making Sense

Madera Verde brings his unique take on global dance music to SOAS RADIO in this weekly live musical meander across genres and continents. A veteran of the London club scene, Madera is currently promoting his very own 4 day dance party in Croatia (next one August 2014 … more info ... www.stopmakingsense.eu). Also somehow finding time to manage bands & promote his new venue BEDROOM BAR in London... On the show, tons of exclusives and pre releases, live mixes & recordings, infrequent guests in the studio and the odd cantankerous rant.

LANDMARK SHOW ALERT!
MADERA VERDE, Chief Rocker at the School Of Permanent Optimism, celebrates 150 shows with an extra joyful musical maelstrom... all the shows are archived on www.soasradio.org, so technically, you could listen to him constantly for just under 7 days, stat fans!

SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND, MADERA?

Its a World Not World selection today that could hold its head high and rock the dancefloor at your local tropical discoteque ... speaking of which ... you can catch Madera Magic at BB most weekends these days ...www.bedroom-bar.co.uk.

ALL ABOARD HMS SMS!

MADERA sails off once again on a kaleidoscopic musical world cruise ...

LETS GO ALL THE WAY, MADERA ...

Like an OCD musical Rubik Cube, the tracks are all of different sonic colours and from all over the place, but when arranged in the right order, it all makes sense! Alos, hark the return of the Vinyl Solution, as it combines for one week only with our regular #oldschoolawesomeness feature.

GLOBAL GAL DEM GALORE

As part of the UNESCO WORLD RADIO DAY 2014 programme on SOAS RADIO, (and to celebrate this year's theme of Gender Equality and Female Empowerment in Radio), MADERA digs in the crates for female vocal led songs from 3 continents and several assorted islands that resonate.

WHAT'S THAT SOUND, MADERA?

Well. 1: its sort of Worldy but its got some electronic bits in it as well. 2: you can dance to most of it. And 3: it makes you imagine you are somewhere hot.

As per life in the SOAS building, there is never a dull moment on the SMS show. We may not have a Nuke-hating dog in the studio, nor have we signed up to the Humus Society just yet, but the tunes are equally eccentric, weird and wonderful. Get involved people!

Ok, its cold; yes, its wet out there; we know, the sky is grey. This calls for a strong dose of musical Vitamin D to combat the mid Jan blues. The doctor will see you now...

NEW YEAR, NEW MADERA

Back in the sack with lots of fresh 2014 releases of the global glitch variety ... and not forgetting a three-in-a-row #oldschoolawesomeness sweep at the end.

BIG IN MADERA'S BOX: 2013 ...

A one-per-month round up of the big SMS tunes of 2013, as is customary this time of year... must be the Season of the Glitch. See you in 2014!

MORE RANDOM ACCESS MADERA ACTION...

Some old, some new ... but all good for you!

GLOBAL GLITCH GALORE

Another back to back foray into World Wobblers & Balearic Bangers...

DOWN TO EARTH DIVA ALERT!

The ever charming super talented one in a million singer and composer NATACHA ATLAS (alongside fellow musician SAMY BISHAI) join MADERA in the studio to talk about their new project LES NUITS, a ballet score based on Sheherazade's 1001 nights. Plus the usual mix of Global Glitch goodness of course...

THE MANY COLOURS OF MADERA

A red hot selection this week. Keeping it bright, in the green and out of the orange on the mixer, this week's show is like an audio version of a Benetton ad (but definitely less annoying...)

MIND THE GAP, MADERA

Its a technologically challenged show today, as MADERA struggles with an old studio desk (following the unexpected bath the proper one took recently). Nevertheless, bar a bit of radio silence here & there, its the usual sterling brand-new-good-for-you selection of global glitchiness for your listening pleasure.

PUTTING A NEW GENRE OUT THERE ...

Allegedly, the term WORLD MUSIC to describe almost any pop music not of English provenance was coined at a late night listening session of promoters and journos at the tail end of the 80s, presided over by the late great broadcaster Charlie Gillett. Then came the term WORLD DANCE, unleashed in the 90s by agit punk prophet Aki Nawaz of Nation Records (Talvin Singh, Fundamental, Jah Wobble, Transglobal Underground, Natacha Atlas). And now MADERA decides to humbly follow suit with GLOBAL GLITCH, to describe, well, what's mostly played on the SMS show ... lets see if that one sticks too!

FRESH OUT OF THE BOX

Mostly brand new, definitely good for you. Its all winners, no fillers on this weeks edition of the SMS show. Not forgetting #oldschoolawesomeness c/o NDALAMI 77 BROTHERS & LEON THOMAS.

WHATS FLOATING MADERA'S BOAT

With MADERA still getting his feet back under the mixing desk ( at the new much earlier time of 14.00 GMT, live every Wednesday), its the usual musical meander across continents and several assorted islands

SOAS I WAS SAYING...

Back from a summer full of frantic festival frenziness, MADERA returns with an hour of glitchy global grooves for your digital delectation

ITS AN ANALOG AFRICA SPECIAL

MADERA goes on a whirlwind musical journey across Africa zooming in on electronic dance floor gems from past & present. And the return of the Vinyl Solution, strictly 45 #oldschoolawesomeness. Yes!

ITS BRASILIAN, MADERA, BUT NOT AS WE KNOW IT…

Today, fresh "electrorganic" sounds from Sao Paulo duo AXIA, in conversation in the studio; as well as the usual Wold-not -World musical hybrids you know & love...

YOU SPOKE TOO SOON, MADERA

Just days after London basked in heat & sunshine, MADERA finds himself reaching for the thermostat as ill winds, tumbling temperatures and general dankness descend on the capital. Sad face. But the tunes are happy and bright as always on the SMS show. Happy face.

SUNSHINE MUSIC FOR SUNSHINE FOLK

At last, its Summer in London, and all of a sudden music sounds much much better… so apart from a few brief dark cloudy musical moments, its a wall-to-wall vitamin D overload on today's show. Don't forget to apply sun screen before listening...

ASTRAL AFRICA ACTION

Alongside the usual myriad of genre busting musical nuggets, MADERA shows off his French skills interviewing JUPITER, rising star of the West African music scene. Fear not, non - Francophones, here is a loose translation of what was said… allez, salut maintenant!

ITS NICE TO SHARE, MADERA…

A lovely bunch of mp3s & wav files landed on the STOP MAKING SENSE virtual front door mat this week. And of course, it is MADERA VERDE's duty to pass on these delightful megabytes, suffused with refreshing licks of worldwide spice, to you, dear dear listeners...

BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD, MADERA

After a couple of mostly electronic shows packed with music made by robots and full of additives, its back to more standard issue, carbon offset, organic SOAS musical fare. No animals were harmed in the making of this programme.

MADERA GOES WAY OVER

Yes, we know the SMS show is only supposed to be just the one hour of fresh world/electronic/whatever action. But sometimes, you just have to go over… especially when it is a crime against music to fade out a 17 minute long Fela Kuti track…
